A great admirer of Abraham Lincoln, Brenner designed the now-famous bust of Lincoln that still appears on the penny today. The first Lincoln cent was issued in 1909, the centennial of Lincolnīs birth, and was the first circulating coin to feature a person, living or deceased. The coinīs reverse showed two ears of wheat encircling the denomination until Brennerīs original design was replaced with the Lincoln Memorial reverse in 1959.
